Cecil was a veteran of World War One, and served as Non commissioned officer. He was sent to France, and three months before his 21st birthday he died of wounds received in action.
Before enlisting he was a star Rugby player on the Malvern Avenue Collegiate Rugby team. His funeral was with full military honors under the auspices of the Artillery Service branch of the Department of Militia Dominion of Canada. He was buried in the old Annis cemetery at Washington Church, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, the only occasion when guns sounded in that sacred spot.
