Before enlisting he was a star Rugby player on the Malvern Avenue Collegiate Rugby team. His funeral was with full military honors under the auspices of the Artillery Service branch of the Department of Militia Dominion of Canada. He was buried in the old Annis cemetery at Washington Church, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, the only occasion when guns sounded in that sacred spot.
