They were the parents of four children - Rebecca Jane(1832-1911), Mary White(1833-'98), Nathaniel(1837-1902) and Major Holman Staples Melcher(1841-1905), a Union soldier, member of the 20th Maine Infantry, and a hero of the Battle of Little Round Top.
