Nell Phipps was the daughter of Thomas and Lorena Berry. The family first lived in Gregory Co. SD and moved to a ranch on Black Pipe Creek 15 miles south of Belvidere when she was 6 years old. She attended high school in Rapid City, college at Huron, SD and Spearfish Normal School. She married Burrell Phipps in 1931. There home was on a cattle ranch near her father's Double X Ranch. They had two daughters, Nancy and Judy
