Mr. J. L. Rolshouse, Superintendent, Allegheny City Home for the Poor of Allegheny City

Allegheny City Home for the Poor of Allegheny City.

Situated at Claremont, on the Western Pennsylvania railroad.

Visited November 9,1887, by Dr. O'Neal, Mr. Sawyer and Mr. Shidle. Commissioner, and Mr. Biddle, General Agent.

The building is a large three-story brick structure, with a front of 286 feet. In the rear is a wing in which are the wards for the insane, a chapel, and a kitchen.

This institution has deservedly in the past borne a good reputation, and it is with pleasure we report that we saw no reason to change our opinion at the time of our present visit. It had when visited 250 inmates, 90 being in the insane department. Mechanics were busily engaged in remodeling the water closets throughout the building, not, however, as we thought on the most effective plan. New washing machines had been placed in the wash house. Gas furnishes fuel for steam heat. It is lighted by oil lamps. Fire escapes are provided, and hose on the stairs is connected with fire plugs in the attics. The food was ample and good. Altogether the management of this home is excellent, and reflects great credit on the superintendent, Mr. J. L. Rolshouse.
