Private, Company K, 34th NY Infantry Volunteers; Serg't, Company B, 16th NY Heavy Artillery, Union, Civil War. At 20 years of age, he was mustered into the service, 15 Jun 1861, Albnay, NY for 2 years. In Sept and Oct he was assigned extra duty as a teamster; discharged 6 Jan 1862, disability chronic rheumetism. Described as 6' 2 1/2", light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair,laborer. He was muster in 26 Sept 1863, Albnay, NY for 3 years as Corporal, Company B, 16th Heavy Artillery; promoted to Serg't from Corpl 1 Feb 1865. Reduced in ranks as he deserted 6 Feb 1865, NY; arrested 7 Feb 1865, Poughkeepsie NY "no reward straggler"; another note Jan & Feb 1865, "detached north from prisoners of war on order of Genl Hawley". Also rank given as Serg't March through August 1865--maybe mistake given as deserted.
