Frank Blair, Jr., a newscaster, journalist and author, attended the College of Charleston but left to join the theatrical touring company. He started his radio career at WCSC in Charleston in 1930. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a flight instructor and transport pilot. After the war, he resumed his broadcast career. Blair began his TV career at NBC in 1951. He joined the Today Show as a newscaster and was known for reading the news in a completely objective manner. In his 22 years of reporting he never expressed his personal viewpoint.
Blair and his wife had eight children. He retired from the Today Show in 1975 and moved to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where he wrote his autobiography, Let's Be Frank About, in which he discussed his life and career, including some bouts with alcoholism. He died 20 years to the day that he left the Today Show.
