Milton Reed Hansen finished his remarkable earthly journey on May 8, 2009, at the age of 79. Known as "Reed" by family and friends, he was born October 30, 1929, in Idaho Falls, the fourth son of Farrel Lawrence and Lily Wahlquist Hansen. At the age of 4, the family moved to a farm where the Idaho Falls airport is now. Later, the land was sold to the city, allowing the airport to be expanded. A new farm was established in the Osgood area. He attended Eagle Rock Elementary, O.E. Bell Junior High School and Idaho Falls High School, where he was active in Future Farmers of America and sports. He attended two and a half years at the University of Idaho. When his father passed away unexpectedly, he returned home to run the family farm with his brother Norman.

On June 7, 1954, Reed married Marilyn Sigrid Hoff, whom he loved and admired. Soon after, he was drafted into the Army and sent to Germany. Marilyn joined Reed in Germany, where later their first child, Marcus Reed, was born. Reed returned to farm and raise a family that soon grew to include five children.

Reed's passion for public service led him to serve as an elected precinct committeeman for the Republican Party, a position he served in for 18 years. He was elected to the Bonneville County Zoning Board and served as chairman for two years. In 1974, Governor Cecil Andrus appointed Reed to the Idaho State Water Board, where he served for 10 years, two of those years as Chairman. In 1984, Reed was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Idaho House of Representatives and served for 14 years. He also was the first chairman of the Bonneville County Library Board.

Reed had a love of adventure and enjoyed mountain climbing, which included climbs up the Tetons; Mt. Borah; Popocatepetl in Mexico; Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, and Tungurahua in Ecuador; as well as a trek in Nepal that took him to the base camp of Mount Everest.

Many know Reed for his prize-winning blue-ribbon sourdough bread, which he baked. He shared numerous loaves over the years with friends and family. Reed had a wonderful sense of humor and a generous spirit. He is beloved by a multitude of friends and family who will miss him dearly.

Reed is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hoff Hansen; five children, Marcus Reed (Dani) Hansen, Karen Marie Hansen, Farrel Bruce (Sandy) Hansen, Roger Brent and Kristine Marie (Said) Hansen-Neftah; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Reed was preceded in death by his father, Farrel Lawrence Hansen Sr.; his mother, Lily Wahlquist Hansen; brother, Dr. Farrel Lawrence Hansen Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Ryan Marcus Hansen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Old Butte LDS Ward Chapel, 1345 Clarence Drive in Idaho Falls. A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
