Fred was married to Margaret E. Smith on November 4, 1922. In June of the following year, Fred drowned while trying to help evacuate Margaret's family after the Salt Fork River flooded the family farm. Their first child, a son, was born shortly after Fred's death.

(My grandmother was Margaret Smith Evans' youngest sister. Grandma was only 3 1/2 years old at the time, and it was her earliest memory. Witnessing this terrible tragedy left her with a lifetime fear of the water.)
