He was a member of the United States Olympic Swimming teams at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England, and at the 1952 Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. At the 1948 games he won the Gold Medal in the 100 meter Backstroke competition (in 1952 he placed fourth in the same event). He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979.
