Mr. William Joseph Hoover, 81, a resident of Harrisonburg, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006. He was born on Nov. 11, 1924, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Lester Abraham and Ruth Mae Chittum Hoover.

Mr. Hoover served in the United States Army during World War II in the 336th Combat Engineer Unit as Rank of Corporal and was in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day.

Mr. Hoover lived all his life in the Harrisonburg area and was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. He graduated from Dayton High School and attended Strayer College. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years until retiring in December 1979. He also assisted James Lineweaver with the Harrisonburg "Turks" ball club for 20 years.

On Aug. 16, 1947, he married, Mary F. Kohne, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a daughter, Deborah Hoover Arbogast and husband, Kelly, of Harrisonburg; one sister, Janet H. Liskey; a half sister, Thelma Lilley of Staunton; two nephews, Donnie Liskey and Gary Liskey; and two nieces, Sherry Lilley and Star Lilley.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon from the Chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Rev. Don Shull and Rev. Jeffrey Butcher officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
