Cecil was the son of Minnie M. Murray and Hugh L. Murray who predeceased his son, the dear brother of Cecila R. Murray of Louisville. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 12 1967 in Louisville KY and arrived in Vietnam on January 2 1968 where he was assigned for duty with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. In mid-June 1968, the 2d Battalion was assigned to the SLF and his unit was re-designated Company G, BLT 2/7, 9th MAB.

On July 11, during Operation EAGER YANKEE in Thua Tien Province, upon making a heli-borne landing a Company perimeter was set up south of Thon Ha My hamlet on Phu Loc Island with night patrols and ambushes sent out. Around midnight a barrage of 81 mm mortar fire hit the Marines position killing four men and wounding twelve who required evacuation. An investigation determined it was friendly H&I fire that fell on the Marine Company position.

Wounded and evacuated to the Station Hospital NSA in DaNang, PFC Murray died the following day as a result of multi fragmentation wounds from the Marine mortar fire.
