Justus was a son of Walter and Martha (Bull) Millard. He spent his younger years in Poughkeepsie. After he married Annie Elizabeth Myers, they went to live in Yonkers because he had charge of the Millard Lumber Company offices for New York City. They left Yonkers to live in New Hamburg about 1875. He had pneumonia several times and doctors advised a change of climate so, in the spring of 1877, they sailed to Jacksonville, Florida, then down the St Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers to the tiny village of Leesburg on Lake Griffin. He bought a small orange grove and house from Nat Moore near what is now Montclair, Florida. His health got better and he enjoyed the work. Justus and Annie had four children: Annie, Walter, Mabel and an infant who died at childbirth. After Justus died of typhoid malarial fever, his family took him back to New York for burial.
