A Prominent and Experienced Dry Goods Merchant of This City

The PRESS gives its reader today a portrait of one of the best known businessmen of this city. Mr. H. T. During. He is a native of Prussia, but came to this country at the age of nine years. Five years later he commenced clerking in a dry goods store at Findley, Ohio.
In 1860 he went to Fort Wayne, Indiana and took a position as a salesman with Roat & Co. proprietors of one of the largest dry goods houses in the city. He remained with them five years, after which he sold goods one year at the Bee Hive Store in Indianapolis and clerked ten years in Terre Haute for the large house of Hoberg, Roat & Co., where he had charge of the silk department. He left them in 1875 to go into business for himself. He is the senior partner of the firm of During & English at Pittsfield, IL., and having a big outlet of goods in the two stores is able to buy goods in large quantities, giving him a great advantage. Mr. During came to this city int he spring of 1887 and has by fair and courteous dealing with all built up a business he may well feel proud of. He is one of our wide awake merchants and keeps abreast of the times in all things.

Herman T During was born May 1, 1849 in Cottbus, Germany. Information on parents is unknown.
According to his Missouri Death Certificate he lived at 322 Pearl St, Joplin, MO. He was a retired dry goods merchant known as H T During Dry Goods, Carthage, MO.
He passed away on July 26, 1919 at 4 pm, at the age of 70 years.
He was buried at Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO on July 27th under the direction of the Frank-Seivers Undertaking Company in Joplin.

H.T. DURING DEAD AT 70

FORMER CARTHAGE MERCHANT SUCCUMBS AT JOPLIN
Body Brought Here for Burial Following Services at Home This Afternoon


H. T. During, a former Carthage merchant, died at 4:15 o'clock Saturday afternoon at his home, 322 North Pearl Street, Joplin. He had been critically ill since a week ago last Tuesday. Uremic poisoning caused his death.

Mr. During was 70 years old. He was born in Cottbus, Germany, but came to America with his parents when nine years old. His parents located in Michigan. His father was a Lutheran minister. After the son grew to manhood he engaged in the dry goods business. He operated a store at Terre Haute, Indiana and Kirksville, Illinois before coming to Carthage about 35 years ago and engaging in the dry goods business here. Six years ago he sold out his business here and moved to Joplin, where he was a salesman for the Newman Department store until March 1, of this year, when he accepted a position as traveling salesman for an eastern wholesale dry goods concern.

His wife and one son, Ed During of Sherman, California survive,
also one sister;
Mrs. Jennie Thaff of Frostburg, Maryland

Mr. During was a charter member of the Elks lodge, but dropped out of the organization after moving from Carthage. He was a member of no other lodge organization. He belonged to the Lutheran church.
The funeral was conducted from the home in Joplin.
Rev. F. L. Geyer of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Joplin officiated.
