Memorial services for Dr. William J. Ackerman will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel with Rabbi Appel officiating. Burial will be in Beth Israel Cemetery. Barham Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Dr. Ackerman, of Ft. Myers, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, in Ft. Myers.
He was born in Natchez, on Sept. 12, 1922 and grew up in Meridian. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1940 and Meridian Junior College in 1942. He graduated from Emory University College of Dentistry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Dr. Ackerman had a successful dental practice in Meridian for more than 20 years and in central Georgia for 25 years. He was an active member of the Meridian community, he was a Mason, a member of the Dental Association, board member of his congregation and the Kiwanis Club.
He was an avid amateur radio operator. In the early 1990's he retired and moved to Ft. Myers, where he began a new career, teaching the visually impaired to use computers. Dr. Ackerman and his wife, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec. 6, 2006.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Kass Ackerman; a son, Joel Ackerman and his wife, Dee, of Atlanta; a daughter, Carolyn "Carrie" Helliesen, and her husband, Doug, of Key West, Fla.; grandchildren, Tovah Ackerman Choudhury and her husband, Raj, and Carly Anneliese Helliesen.
Memorials may be made to Congregation Beth Israel in Meridian or to the American Cancer Society.
Visitation will be Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.
