Bernard E. Meister was born in Ludington Michigan in 1938 before his family returned to Memphis Tenn in the late 1950's. being the son of a World War II veteran, Butch joined the Marines after graduating from High School.

Upon his discharge he became a police officer in the city of Memphis. He remained a police officer until 1966 when he then entered The United States Army to become a helicopter pilot. Upon earning his wings he began his first tour of Vietnam in the winter of 67. He was with the 189th AHC for his first tour of duty.

He returned to the States in 1968 and became a TAC officer at Fort Walters Texas after completing AH-1G flight school. At the end of 1968 he prepared to return to Vietnam for his second tour of duty.

In 1969 he did indeed return to Vietnam and served with the 334th AHC. It was during the last 10 days of his second tour that his helicopter went down in Long Kahan.

During his military service he obtained the DFC, SM, PH with 1 oak leaf cluster, ACM with V device and 2 oak leaf clusters, BS, AM with numeral 35, A undocumented SS was also awarded to him amongst his other medals.
