Adam A. Danner was born in Frederick County, Maryland about 1842. He is found with his parents and siblings in the 1850 census listed as age 8 and in 1860 as age 15. His military service records and other factors point to the 1850 census being nearer his correct age.

Adam enlisted for service in the Union Army at Westminster, Maryland. He was a Private in Co. A, 6th Maryland Infantry, Army of the Potomac. The muster-in roll dated 12 August 1862 states that he was then age 19. He was described on a Company Commander's certificate as being 19 at enlistment, 5' 5 1/2" tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. His civilian occupation was that of a miller. His father was a farmer. The C.O.'s certificate also lists his full name as Adam A. Danner.

Adam saw action in several places during his two years in service. On 15 June 1863, he was captured by the Confederates at Winchester, Virginia. He was confined at Richmond on 23 June and paroled on 8 July. He reported to Camp Parole, Maryland and returned to duty. He continued to serve "honestly and faithfully with his Company" but sadly was killed in action at Cold Harbor, Virginia on 1 June 1864. He was just 21, still single, and childless. On 31 August 1887, his then widowed mother filed for a pension owing to his death in service.
