The 8th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach, Normandy on 4 Jul 1944, and drove eastward toward the German border, taking part in the heavy fighting in the Hürtgen Forest in November 1944. From 1 - 16 Nov 1944, the Division was in Luxenbourgh, maintaining an active defense along a 22 mile front. On 16 Nov 1944, the Division continued its drive to the Hürtgen Forest in Germany; this was also the day that PFC Charles H. Moorefield was killed in action.
