Attended Mechanicsburg Academy (MD). Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, 6th Maryland Infantry, Civil War. Wounded in action at Battle of the Wilderness VA, on 5 May 1864. Captured at the Battle of Winchester VA on 19 September 1864; held POW at Libby and Danville prison camps in VA and at Salisbury NC before paroled. Promoted Brevet Major for gallant action at Battle of Winchester and Brevet Lt Col for gallant and meritorious service during the war. Elected to MD House of Delegates in 1867; did not seek re-election. Appointed Postmaster of Thurmont in 1869. Served as Frederick County MD Register of Wills beginning 1873. Elected and served in MD House of Delegates from 1894-1900. Appointed as Deputy Register of Wills for Washington DC, serving from 1900-1904. Member of Demuth Post 80, G.A.R., and the Evangelical Lutheran Church, both of Thurmont. Married Harriet E. Willhide 7 May 1866; she died in childbirth in 1868. He then married Julia Willhide Willman, the widowed sister of his first wife, in 1871.
