b. Fairfield, Vt., Apr. 22, 1856; s. Jonathan and Deborah Fay (Mitchell) Northrop; ed. common schs., Sheldon, Vt.; grad. Goddard Sem., Barre. Vt., 1883: course in Columbia Law Sch., Washington, D.C., 1885; m. Sept. 2, 1891, Katie Fletcher, of Jeffersonville, Vt. Purchased farm, 1890, and is now one of the leading farmers of Vt.; also one of the largest maple sugar producers In the state, one of his farms containing about 15,000 maple trees; owner of Northrop's Private Creamery, breeder of pure blood Holstein cattle; treas. Sheldon Cemetery Assn. Has served as tax assessor, sch. dir., selectman (chmn. bd.), county highway commr. ; mem. Vt. Ho. of Rep., 1900; secured appropriation for tablet for birthplace of Pres. Chester A. Arthur and purchased site which he donated to State of Vt.; defeated extravagant legislation. Progressive in politics. Mem. Vt. Dairymen's Assn., Maple Sugar Makers' Assn. (auditor).
