Grace H. McCurdy was born June 20, 1890 at Merrit, Ill., near Jacksonville, the only child of George and Katherine Schier Haven. She attended school in Whitehall, Ill, and was a graduate of Normal State Teachers college at Normal, Ill. She taught at Lakeview and Edrid before coming to Alpha about 40 years ago where she taught for several years. Her mother died in 1917 and she kept house for her father and taught school until her marriage to John T McCurdy of Alpha, Sept 20, 1920.

The past ten years she had spent the winters in Truth or Consequences, N.M. She was taken ill about three weeks ago and was taken to the hospital in El Paso, Tex., where everything possible was done for her before her demise.
