Grace H. McCurdy was born June 20, 1890 at Merrit, Ill., near Jacksonville, the only child of George and Katherine Schier Haven. She attended school in Whitehall, Ill, and was a graduate of Normal State Teachers college at Normal, Ill. She taught at Lakeview and Edrid before coming to Alpha about 40 years ago where she taught for several years. Her mother died in 1917 and she kept house for her father and taught school until her marriage to John T McCurdy of Alpha, Sept 20, 1920.
She was afflicted with arthritis and the couple spent the winters in Aldo Vista, Fla., where her father had a fruit farm until February, 1937 when he came back to live with his daughter until his death, Nov. 16, 1937.
Mr. McCurdy was a loyal member of the Alpha Baptist Church, the Woman's Society and the Loyal Workers class. She was an honorary member of the Alpha Community Woman's Club. She had written poetry since a young girl, and had two books of her poems published.
Mrs. McCurdy had an exceptionally keen mind, was a quiet woman who had many friends who loved and trusted her, and she was a woman of exceptionally strong religious convictions and principles and a true friend.
The past ten years she had spent the winters in Truth or Consequences, N.M. She was taken ill about three weeks ago and was taken to the hospital in El Paso, Tex., where everything possible was done for her before her demise.
Surviving are five cousins, Orvis McCullon of Whitehall, Mildred Vestal of Murrayville, Delta Rimberg of Roadhouse, Myrle Paul and Walter Surbec of Hillview, Ill.
