Comte Frédéric de Mérode was a younger son of Comte Guillaume de Mérode, 5th Prince de Rubempré et d'Everberghe, and his wife, Marie d'Ongnies, Comtesse de Mastaing, Princesse de Grimberghe. He was a hero of the Belgian Revolution for independence from the Netherlands and a brother of Comte Félix de Mérode, a member of the Provisional Government. He was seriously wounded on October 24, 1830 at the Battle of Berchem, near Antwerp, and died in Mechelen ten days later after having his leg amputated. He was the first member of the Belgian high nobility to die in the fighting and was considered a Belgian national hero.
