Ellis received his Ph.D. from Auburn University and was a professor of Education at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tennessee. He was a talented violinist.
Ellis married Elizabeth Martin on May 16, 1936 and they had two children, Mary Ellece Burns and Ellis Martin "Burnsie" Burns. Ellis was tax assessor for Cullman County but before the end of his second term, he volunteered for military service and the Governor appointed Elizabeth to finish his term. After the war, Ellis operated a laundry but he was not happy and wanted to return to education. He sold the laundry and he and Elizabeth both returned to school at St. Bernard College while Ellis taught at Holly Pond. He eventually received his PhD from Auburn University and taught at Austin Peay State University while Elizabeth taught in the public school system in Clarksville, TN. On retirement, and after Ellis became ill, he and Elizabeth returned to Cullman.
