Anchorage resident MADELEINE MAE HICKEL, 70, died Oct. 14, 2001, at home after a lengthy illness. Visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown with a Rosary. Services were at Holy Family Cathedral. Officiants included the Most Rev. Francis T. Hurley, archbishop emeritus. Burial was at Angelus Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hickel was born Dec. 21, 1930, in Emporia, Kan. She graduated in 1948 from Claflin High School in Kansas. She moved to Alaska in 1948. Mrs. Hickel was a homemaker and mother of 17 children. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, member of Catholic Daughters and Catholics United for the Faith, and participated in other church activities. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, reading and, especially, quiet time. Her family said that she instilled the faith and love of our Lord Jesus Christ in them. ''Though her patience was challenged many times over, as wife and mother of 17 children, she was never too busy for family or friends in their time of need or their time of joy. Through her examples, she revealed to all her generous, understanding and loving heart. She will be missed by all, and she will forever remain in our prayers.''

Mrs. Hickel is survived by her husband, Vernon W. Hickel of Anchorage; daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Eric Helzer of Anchorage, Kathy Headlough of Kansas, Karen Burger of Soldotna, Mary and Lewis McMillian of Kansas, Victoria and Charlie Elliott of Arizona, Roberta and Dan Zipay, and Marilyn Walker and Jeannette Hickel of Anchorage; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Lisa Hickel of Texas, Paul and Tammy Hickel of Georgia, Peter and Laurel Hickel, Vernon E. Hickel and Donald and Julie Hickel, all of Anchorage, Daniel Hickel of Arizona, and Raymond and Suzanne Hickel of Anchorage; 53 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Anthony Hickel; parents, Hoyt and Jeannette Hamilton; son-in-law, Dale Eugene Walker; and daughter, Theresa Ann Hickel Milazzo. Memorial donations may be sent to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Building Fund, 3900 Wisconsin St., Anchorage 99517.
