Raymond Brooks

NEW MARSHFIELD - Raymond H. Brooks, 87, of New Marshfield, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008. Born July 2, 1920, in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Marve and Bessie Treadway Brooks. He was married to June Lowry Brooks, who survives.

Raymond served as a member of the Coast Guard for three years during World War II, and graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in administration. He spent the first two years of his teaching career at Wakefield High School in Pike County. He was then a teacher, coach and, later, principal in the Waterloo School District, beginning in 1951. He was principal of Alexander High School from 1966 until becoming superintendent of Alexander Local Schools and retiring in 1977. He was then hired as superintendent of Athens County Schools and served in that capacity from 1980 to 1985. He was a member of Constitution Lodge for more than 50 years.

In addition to his wife, June, he is survived by sons, Robert (Phyllis) Brooks of Albany, George (Patti) Brooks of New Marshfield and John Brooks of New Marshfield; a daughter, Pam Mitchell of Belpre; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Willard N. "Bill" (Elsie) Brooks of New Marshfield.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville, with the Rev. David Cogar officiating.

Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery, Hocking County, where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 5 to 8 p.m., where a Masonic service will be conducted by Constitution Lodge at 7:30 PM

The family suggests that contributions in memory of Raymond H. Brooks be made either to the Alexander Future Foundation, Alexander Local School District, P.O. Box 337, Albany, OH 45710; or to the Waterloo Alumni Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 277, Nelsonville, OH 45764.
