Composer, poet and revolutionary. First president of Cuba. Born in Bayamo. He and his family moved to Havana and while studying law in Europe, he became involved in the Cuban independence movement and went exile to France due to his nationalist views. After living in exile for one year, he returned to Cuba to open his law firm in his hometown and continued to be involved in the Cuban independence movement. In October 1868, he went on to fight for his homeland by starting the Ten Years' War alongside his followers and former slaves. One year later, he became a president of Cuba. After years of fighting for Cuban independence and the liberation of slaves during the Ten Years' War, it was unsuccessful and he was deposed a year before his death. 24 years after his death, Cuba finally archived independence from Spain thanks to a peace treaty.
