Services have been held for William Beresford Brown, 74, descendant of a pioneer California family who was active in the San Francisco hotel industry.


Mr. Brown died on March 24 at his home here.


He was a descendant of William Sharon, an early U.S. senator representing Nevada. The senator was the leading financier during the Nevada silver boom in the 1870s and was involved in the San Francisco hotel business.


Mr. Brown, a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and the Cornell University graduate school of hotel administration, was a resident manager of the Sharon family-owned Palace Hotel in San Francisco before World War II.


During World War II, he was a lieutenant colonel in the Army Air Forces in Europe. After the war, he was associated with the Prudential Life Insurance Co. for more than 30 years.


He was active in civic affairs on the Monterey Peninsula, serving on the boards of several agencies and civic groups.


He was married for 32 years to Carol Henning Brown, the first wife of Nobel Prize-winning novelist John Steinbeck. She died in 1983.


He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Brown Bacon of San Francisco, and a sister, Frances A. Doud of Carmel.
