Blossom E. Levy, a local actress who worked as a psychiatric social worker during the 1970s and early 1980s, died Monday at her Buffalo home. She was 94.
Born in New York City, the former Blossom Akst was the daughter of songwriter Harry Akst, who wrote such popular American songs as "Dinah" and "Am I Blue." She moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was a child and graduated from Beverly Hills High School and then attended the University of California at Los Angeles to study drama.
During World War II, she briefly toured stateside with a United Service Organization troupe before moving to New York City to continue her acting studies. That also is where she met her future husband of 41 years, David I. Levy, an advertising executive who died in 1988. The couple relocated to Buffalo, where Mrs. Levy appeared in productions at the Lake Shore Playhouse and the original Studio Arena.
While simultaneously raising a family, Mrs. Levy used her acting skills as a volunteer with the psychodrama therapy program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, which led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1968 and a master of social work degree in 1970 from the University at Buffalo.
Mrs. Levy worked at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic in the 1970s and 1980s. After her retirement, she became a volunteer at Millard Fillmore Hospital and also took courses at the Trinity Center.
She immersed herself in the arts, particularly music, the visual arts and theater. She was a decades-long subscriber to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and donated to local and national charities that promoted conservation, animal protection and women's health.
