Gladys (Grandma) was a remarkable lady. Visiting her was the highlight of our trips back to Illinois when I was a child. Her home was a fun place to be: old pedal sewing machine, ice box (which took her years to replace with a newer refrigerator)and old photographs, we can't forget her "candy drawer" in the kitchen. My father was born in that house as well as his sister. Grandma was deathly afraid of thunderstorms, she would grab her purse and "money box" and go to the basement whenever it stormed. Grandma cared for her daughter, Joan, through her battle with cancer which sadly Joan did not win. Shortly after Joanne's death, Grandma was diagnosed with cancer. She always believed that we all would get cancer no matter how healthy we lived our lives, so her diagnosis came as no surprise to her. She fought her battle like a trooper, never complaining and always smiling. Rest in Peace Grandma.
