Thorvald Bull was born in Valestrand, 17 August 1841. He received a musical education and played the flute, among other things. Later he focused on his career at sea.

The sister Felicie is known as the only one of the children who carried the family on. However, this is not entirely correct, as Thorvald had two illegitimate children; Ole Thorvaldson Vevletveit and Theoline Bolette Bull. The son Ole died on Osterøy approx. one year old. Theoline had five children, most of whom emigrated to America. Tragic accident On a voyage in the Mediterranean in 1862, Thorvald fell from the ship's mast and died, aged just 21. He was buried in Malta. The accident took a heavy toll on Ole Bull, who for many years had tried to dissuade him from making the sea his livelihood.
