Helvig Paus, until 1919 officially named Helvig von Paus in Austria, was born in 1909 in Vienna to the Norwegian consul Thorleif (von) Paus and Ella née Stein. Her mother had been raised as a Catholic but had a Jewish father. Helvig was baptised in the Lutheran Church of Norway. She lived in Vienna until 1938, when she fled with her mother to Oslo when the Nazis took power in Austria. She died in Oslo in 1976. In 1915 she was painted by the famous painter Eilif Peterssen, in one of his most charming portraits of children.
