Robbie grew up on a farm near St. Charles, MI. She left the farm and her family at the age of 16 to attend college. She obtained her R.N. from Saginaw General Hospital and shortly thereafter began her career in nursing at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. She moved on to the University of Michigan Hospitals in the late 1960's where she retired as the head nurse of the Children's Psychiatric Hospital in 1980.
She moved to S.F. with her second husband, John L. McGirr shortly after leaving the U of M. There she continued to volunteer her time as a nurse at California Pacific Medical Center as well as at various Thrift Shops in the city. She and John had the opportunity to travel all over the world including much of Europe, So. America, Australia, New Zealand & the Caribbean. She was a caring, compassionate woman with a wonderful sense of humor. She was a voracious reader and a frequent patron of the library in China Town that was just down the block from her apartment. Her family, friends and the many lives she touched along the way will sorely miss her.
She is survived by her loving husband John L. McGirr and his children Michael (of Washington D.C.) and Nancy (of Guatemala). Also by her children Catherine Newland; grandson, Alex, Robert Carden (Patricia); grandchildren, Caitlin and Will and son, David Carden all of Ann Arbor, and Daniel Carden (Tina); grandson, Jacob of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. She was a very modest woman, accordingly, her wishes were to have no Memorial Services. She donated her remains to benefit others via the University of California at S.F. After which her ashes will be spread under the Golden Gate Bridge.
