Woodrow, the son of Constance Adams of Amityville NY and William Adams enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 20 1967 at Ft Hamilton NY. He arrived in Vietnam on November 18 1968 where he was assigned for duty with Company D, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 22 a patrol from Company D were ambushed by an estimated twenty NVA who opened fire on the Marines near the Thy Tu (10 hamlet in the Hoa Vang District of Quang Nam Province. The enemy was engaged in a fire fight and a platoon of reinforcements was sent to the scene. Four men were killed and four were wounded during the confrontation with the enemy, with one of the casualties being PFC Adams who was killed in the action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
