The Gulf Livestock 1 was near the Amami Oshima Island in southwestern Japan (East China Sea) on September 2, 2020 due to Typhoon Maysak. The vessel subsequently capsized with all souls on board and sunk.
The vessel, which had experienced engine problems before, had been traveling from Napier in New Zealand to the Chinese port of Tangshan with a livestock delivery. The ship stalled when the engine stopped, the electrical room was flooded when the ship was listing at 30 degrees; and a wave capsized the vessel in the dark.
Two survivors were recovered by the Japan Coast Guard, one on the 2nd and one on the 4th, and one deceased crew member. The remaining forty crew members are presumed lost at sea. Search and rescue efforts were suspended on September 9th, 2020. The ship owners have refused to recover the ships recording device from its undersea location.
As of September 2, 2023, the third year anniversary of this tragedy, a full investigation has not been completed regarding the events of this accident. No other physical remains have been recovered since the sinking of the vessel.
The Gulf Livestock 1 was one of 876 vessels lost at sea in the decade to 2021.
