Matilda Barker Valandra
Matilda Barker Valandra, a longtime resident of Springfield, died Feb. 26 in Hollywood, Calif. Mrs. Valandra was born Oct. 18, 1897, In Eminence, New York.

She graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota, and became one of South Dakota's outstanding educators. She was a teacher, high school principal, county superintendent of schools, historian, and the author of "Our State," which was used in South Dakota's history classes for three decades. During the flu epidemic of 1918, Mrs. Valandra was credited for saving 28 lives in an emergency clinic in White River, South Dakota, which she created when existing medical facilities proved inadequate. She also taught In the Springfield and Bois D'Arc school systems.

Mrs. Valandra lived In Springfield most recently from 1937 through 1959. She is the mother of TV personality of Bob Barker, Hollywood, and Kent Valandra, a business executive of Darien, Conn. In addition to her sons, she is survived by two sisters; her daughter-in-law, Lorraine Valandra; and three grandchildren, Robert, Victoria, and Kent Jr. Valandra.

Private graveside services will be held in Maple Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations may be made to United Activists for Animal Rights, P.O. Box 2448, Riverside, 92516.
