Professional Football Player, Coach. For twelve seasons (1960 to 1970 and 1974), he played at the linebacker position in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins. Born Maxie Calloway Baughan, he attended Bessemer High School in Alabama where he participated in football, basketball and track & field. He enrolled at Georgia Tech where he achieved consensus All-American recognition and received MVP honors for the Cotton Bowl Game in 1959. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2nd round of the 1960 NFL Draft, he totaled 147 career regular season games. He experienced a world championship with the 1960 Philadelphia Eagles and individually, he achieved Pro-Bowl honors nine-times (1960 to 1961, 1963 to 1969) and All-Pro status in 1964. In 1972, he began a lengthy coaching career initially as a defensive coordination at Georgia Tech (1972 to 1973). After briefly coming out of retirement with the Washington Redskins in 1974, he resumed his coaching career as defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Colts (1975 to 1979) and served at the same capacity with the Detroit Lions from 1980 to 1982. For six seasons (1983 to 1988), he served as head coach at Cornell University and returned to the professional ranks as linebacker coach with the Minnesota Vikings from 1990 to 1991. He served as linebacker coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1992 to 1995 and had one final stint as linebacker coach with the Baltimore Ravens from 1996 to 1998. He was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and was named to the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame in 2015. He is widely thought of as being worthy for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
