Soheil was the third child of Mirza Muhsin Afnan and Tuba Khanum, and a grandson of 'Abdu'l-Baha. He was educated at College des Freres in Haifa and the American University in Beirut, before moving on to the Sorbonne and Oxford. He then studied ancient Greek, obtained a doctorate at Cambridge and became a teacher of Iranian linguistics. He published a number of books. He spent his last years in Istanbul doing research at the Topkapi and other libraries there. He never married and died in Istanbul aged 85.
