Clara Lorentze-Berry
(Sept. 2, 1919 - July 9, 2009)
Clara Lorentze Berry was born in Bergen, Norway, to Clara And Ole Mustad on September 2, 1919. Her father's family founded the prominent fish hook company Ole Mustad & Sons. Clara loved her heritage and their family estate "Torke" in Gjovik, Norway. At the age of four her family immigrated to the U.S. and eventually settled in El Monte, Calif. Clara attended Covina High School. While at Pasadena Junior College, she was introduced by a friend to William Berry (Bill), who had graduated from Cal Tech. They married in August of 1940. Bill had a long career with Howard Hughes and most notably, was the Electrical Engineer of the Spruce Goose, Howard's notorious "flying boat." Clara watched in awe from below in a boat in Long Beach harbor as Bill took off with Howard on the airplane's only flight. They remained married for 64 years until Bill's passing in 2004.
Clara raised ten children. Her eldest son, Jan, became a well known singer/song writer in the surf group "Jan & Dean." Clara is survived by her sister Tippie, children Luana, Kenny, Brian, Aleta, Billy, and Missy, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Clara was preceded in death by her four brothers, Dick, Ole, Morrie, and Hans, her daughter Carol and her sons Jan, Bruce, and Stevie. Clara's life was devoted to raising children. She also undertook a career as a bookkeeper at Studio Instrument Rentals. Clara was blessed with beautiful and youthful looks, was kind and caring, and was a friend to all. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, keep up on entertainment news, enjoy sushi lunches, visit friends, and take road trips with family. Clara had a love for farm animals. She will be forever adored and missed by her family and legions of friends.
Services for Clara will be on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills at 2:30 p.m. in the Old North Church. She will be laid to rest in the Hillside Section, near her daughter Carol.
