Thomas Armstrong was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1830 to James R. Armstrong (born in Ireland )and Isabella Buchanan Armstrong (born in Ireland). He had 8 brothers and sisters and he was the first of the family to be born in the United States. One of his brothers (George B. Armstrong) would gain distinction as founder of Railway Mail Service *
The family moved to Baltimore in approx. 1835. In the 1850 census, he is listed with the rest of the family with his occupation a clerk. It is not known where he was a clerk in Baltimore, or when he left town to go out on his own. He was baptized at the age of 22 at Broadway Presbyterian Church in 1852. He is next found in the marriage records as having married Helen Thompson in May 7 1861 in Marion Indiana. When he came to Cedar Rapids (in about 1870 or 71 ) he was a clerk and later he obtained a position in the Post Office. He may have held other clerkships and accounting positions, ( JWA's diary) He travelled to Panama according to JWA diary and also Thomas' own account. He would eventually become assistant Postmaster of Cedar Rapids. It is speculated that his older brother may have had influence in helping him obtain his position and possibly the reason for coming to Cedar Rapids. Thomas Armstrong and Helen Thompson Armstrong had 3 children.

Mabel Armstrong b. 1869 d.1959 never married
