Captain Charles Walcott entered the Royal Navy on June 29th, 1810 on board the Menelans, in which ship he was at the reduction of the Isle of France in 1811. On May 28th, 1812, the Menelans pursued the French frigate Rauline and a brig under the batteries at Toulon, and then effected a masterly retreat from the French fleet. Walcott removed to the Hebrus in August 1814, in which ship he served at the capture of the town of St Mary's; was at the forcing of Gironde, in that year and at the memorable bombardment of Algiers on August 27th, 1816. After serving successively on the Eridanus, Queen Charlotte and Sybille, he was appointed acting Lieutenant of the Confiance, in February 1819, and confirmed in that rank May 19th following. Returning from the West Indies, he joined the Tartar. In December 1825 he served in the Warsprite, August 1826 the Champion, both in the East Indies, and on March 23rd, 1831 the Asia, at Lisbon. He was promoted to the rank of commander, June 5th, 1834, and from March 22nd, 1838, until he obtained post rank, June 5th, 1846, was employed in the Coast Guard.
