Politician. He was the son of former Sri Lankan prime ministers Solomon Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandanaike, and the brother of former Sri Lanka's first woman president Chandrika Kumaratunga. Educated at the Royal College in Columbo, Sri Lanka, and the University of London, he was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in 1977. During his political career he served as leader of the political opposition from 1983 to 1988, minister of higher education from 1993 to 1994, speaker of the national parliament from 2000 to 2001, minister of tourism from 2004 to 2007, and as the nation's foreign minister in 2005. He died from complications of liver cancer in Columbo at the age of 59.
