Olympic Gold Medalist. He was a pole vaulter, who represented the United States at the 1948, 1952, and 1956 Olympic games. At the 1952 games in Helsinki, Finland and the 1956 games in Melbourne, he captured one gold medal at each game. In 1948 at his first Olympics he won the bronze medals while representing the United States. He was the only two-time event winner in Olympic history. In 1984 he ran for the office of the President of the United States as a candidate on the Populist Party ticket. During the same time frame, he became an ordained minister. He was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2009 and was inducted into the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017. He was also elected to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983 and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1975.
