In 1984 he ran for the office of the President of the United States as a candidate on the Populist Party ticket. During the same time frame, he became an ordained minister. He was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2009 and was inducted into the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017. He was also elected to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983 and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1975.
