Son of Gunning and Susannah (Jaquet) Bedford. Married Ann Cuyler on June 10, 1784 in Second Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia.

Originally interred in the Second Presbyterian burial ground on Arch Street. Removed to Mount Vernon Cemetery when the churchyard was cleared in 1867.
