U.S. Presidential Cabinet Secretary, Educator. She served as the Secretary of Commerce under President Barack Obama from August 1, 2011, to October 21, 2011, and June 11, 2012, to June 1, 2013. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota with a degree in economics and earned a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She later went into the academic world, teaching at Northwestern University and serving as dean of the School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. During the administrations of Presidents George H.W. Bush and William J. Clinton, she served on the Council of Economic Advisors, first as a senior staff member and then, as a member of the council. In 2009, she joined the Department of Commerce and went on to serve in various positions including Deputy Secretary of Commerce and acting Secretary of Commerce. After leaving the government, she went back to the academic world as Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2013 to 2022.
