Professional Baseball Player. "Philly" Holmes played shortstop and second base in the Negro leagues for multiple teams from 1934 to 1945. After attending Bethune-Cookman College, he joined the Jacksonville Red Caps in 1934. Holmes remained with the club when it joined the Negro American League in 1938. He stayed with the team in 1939 when it moved to Cleveland and became the Cleveland Bears, and also appeared with the Indianapolis ABCs/Atlanta Black Crackers that season. He did not appear again the Negro major leagues until 1945, when he played for both the Cincinnati/Indianapolis Clowns and the New York Black Yankees. He batted .254 in 47 documented Negro major league games, with one home run and 25 runs batted in. He later scouted for the St. Louis Browns. His older brother, Frank "Lefty" Holmes, also played in the Negro leagues.
