Olympic Champion. At the 1976 Winter Olympics representing the Soviet Union that took place in Innsbruck, Austria with his wife as his partner they participated in the ice dancing event in which they distinguished themselves by winning the gold medal. He began his ice-skating career at the age of six when his mother heard that the local ice-skating school, Sokolnicki was taking new students. He met his future wife, Lyudmila Pakhomova when she invited him to skate with her. At the 1968 Olympics they performed together in ice dancing to determine if the event would be added to future Olympics. In the World Championships in the ice dancing event they won six gold medals (1970-1974, 1976) and one silver (1969). They also competed at the European Championships where once again the won gold at six events (1970, 1971, 1973-1976) one bronze (1969) and one silver (1972). As a pair they were the first to win the ice dancing event at the Olympics. He later served as chairman of the International Skating Union's ice dance technical committee. In 1988 the couple was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. His first wife Lyudmila Pakhomova passed away on 17 May 1986. He later remarried. His death was announced by the director general of the Russian Figure Skating Federation.
