US Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the 73rd United States Attorney General during the Administration of President Jimmy Carter from 1979 until 1981. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University and later attained his law degree from the University of Maryland. He commenced practicing privately before becoming Assistant US Attorney for Maryland from 1962 to 1964. In 1977, he joined the US Justice Department where he was in charge of the Civil Rights division and in 1979, he succeeded Griffin Bell as United States Attorney General. During his tenure, he will be remembered for deporting illegal Iranian aliens during the hostage crisis (1979 to 1981) and his arguing for the release of the US hostages before the World Court. After leaving office, he served on several boards.
