Australian Diplomat and Politician. He was the son of Percy Spender who was the Australian Ambassador to the United States 1951-1958. He received his college education at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and Gray's Inn in Central London. He was appointed as the Australian Ambassador to France in 1996, a post he held until 2000. He also served as a non-resident ambassador to Portugal from 1996 until 1998 and a special envoy to Cyprus from 1996 until 2000.
