Author. He was an Argentinian novelist, essayist, diarist as well as the author of plays and short stories. He was born in Buenos Aires, but shortly after his birth his family moved to San Pedro. At the age of eighteen, he returned to his hometown and in 1952 won the literary contest of the literary magazine "Vea y lea" with the short story "Volvedor". He directed "El grillo de papel" in 2005 and, with Liliana Heker, co-directed "El escarabajo de oro" in 1968 and "El ornitorrinco " in 1977. He won the Platinum Konex Award and the Brilliant Award, the Casa de las Américas Award, and the Municipal Novel Award, among several others. Influenced by Edgar Allan Poe, Jorge Luis Borges and Malcolm Lowry, he wrote, with clear and precise prose, stories and novels in which the themes could be both everyday life and the fantastic. In theater, his play "Israfel" in 1964, based on the life of Edgar Allan Poe, was a great success. His most important novel was "El que tiene sed" in 1985, in which, with an alter ego, he narrates stormy aspects of his life. "Cuentos crueles" in 2000 is his most important book of short stories and in which "La madre de Carlos" was published, a masterpiece of Argentine short stories. In 2014 he won the Diamond Konex Award as the best writer in the last decade in Argentina. He was cremated in Cementerio Parque Iraola.
