Plantation and dwelling, 105 acre, part of "Baldwin's Chance," bequeathed by father Mr. John Baldwin Jr.

Family burial grounds were once known to abound throughout early Maryland and many of these burial grounds were abandoned and forgotten as families and communities moved to new locations. While formal city and church cemeteries are the grave yards most people think of as final resting places, family and community burial grounds were common historically, especially in rural areas, and these have often been abandoned and forgotten with the passage of time. When families sold their plantations, they sometimes made an exception in the deed to retain ownership of the family burial ground. Sometimes these deed reservations are specific about where the burial site was located, but often all it says is that it was somewhere on the property.
