Diplomat. Appointed Consul of Portugal in Bonn on April 12, 1911, having been transferred to Demerara, British Guiana on November 11, 1914 and then to Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on May 25, 1912. He was transferred to Cape Town on June 4, 1914). He was promoted to 1st class consul on May 15, 1915. He was then transferred to Cádiz, Spain on January 10, 1920 and from there again to Cape Town, where he died, a month after he had received the appointment as plenipotentiary minister in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was the father of Cecy Lucrécia Riet de Arriaga Lucas de Lima, Manuel José "Lolo" Riet de Arriaga, Maria Helena Riet de Arriaga Schmidt and Nuno Fernando de Arriaga.

His remains arrived in Lisbon on August 25, 1921 to be interred in his family mausoleum.
